Book No. 29 – Everlast

17 Feb

Book number 28 is called Everlast by Chad Michael Murray. It’s actually not a book, but a “graphic novel.” Anyways, I had heard about this graphic novel that Chad was working on and thought it sounded pretty interesting and then coincidentally I stumbled upon it at Barnes and Nobles one day. So what did I do? Picked it up, sat down on the floor, and ready every single page!! This story is about a man named Derek Everlast who is a soldier tasked with saving souls and taking them to their salvation called “Haven.” The catch, however, is that not everybody gets to go to Haven… only about 150,000 thousand souls will be saved during the apocalypse. This story unfolds when Everlast is on his last mission to save the very last soul, a girl by the name of Melissa. And, as it turns out, Melissa is much more than the last soul saved. She is the key to the salvation of all of humanity. Everlast’s brother is working against him, convinced that Melissa is in fact instead the key to the end of the world. (This sounds like something written  by the brilliant Joss Whedon) A creative, suspenseful, and entertaining read about what happens when we must face the end of the world and the end of humanity. Which among us are the chosen ones? The ones chosen to live the rest of our lives in Heaven. Everlast himself, is a complex and selfless character. He understands the importance of his job and gives up the chance to live his own life, to ensure that the chosen ones get to Haven. (starting to sound like an episode of Buffy, isn’t it?) He’s a realist and yet he’s also an idealist and, like a faithful dog, will go straight into the burning flames to save that one last soul. I’ve never read a graphic novel before this one, because well, I’ve never really been into comic books and such, but I was pleasantly surprised by the subject matter that encompasses Everlast. It’s a beautiful story about love, sacrifice, salvation and destiny. The biggest thing I took away from this graphic novel is the idea of always fighting for what is right. Everlast knows what is best for the world, for these lost souls in need of being saved, and he puts their well being above his own. That is the stuff of heroes right there. My dad has always raised me to believe that we should all take responsibility for our own lives, we have to help ourselves. But, some people go through life depending on the kindness of strangers.. and I think this is a truly wonderful sentiment. Because as John Lennon said, “I get by with a little help from my friends.” Sometimes, a simple smile from a stranger or friendly small talk at the grocery store, or even a tiny little compliment can help a person get through the day. So, like Derek Everlast, we must always try to reach out to those who need it and to help those that can not help themselves. What may seem like the smallest act of kindness could end up saving a life. Heroes are most notably knows as the fictional characters like Superman and Batman or people that are famous, but let me tell you something. The real heroes live among us, they are people just like you and me, and they make the world a better place without accepting any credit for it. Be a hero to someone. The real heroes are the ones who believe they can change a persons life, and then do.

Xo.

    HEY,
The beginning reminded me of something that comes from the bible. Fortunately for us we don’t have a magic number. All of us will be saved that want to be saved. Cool Huh???
How about reading a book out of the bible and give us your take on it? You may enjoy it. You may also find out that many of the books you’ve read may be loosley based on an idea that comes straight from the bible. Just a thought.

Yes, the beginning of it does remind me of the bible. The idea originally came to the author because a man came and knocked on his door preaching to him about the end of the world and how only a few would be saved. I have been meaning to delve into The Bible, so I will definitely do that! Thanks for reading 🙂
