Ten Films That Will Change Your Life

1. Silver Linings Playbook. This one is obvious, but I had to include it in my list because this movie is phenomenal. It is all about accepting your imperfections and learning to love yourself despite all of your flaws and mistakes. It also turns the stigma of mental illness into a beautiful thing that should be faced and accepted rather than judged. This one is for the broken, the damned, the outcasts, and those who live on the margins of society. Everyone will benefit from watching this movie.

2. The Air I Breathe. This movie is beautifully crafted, based on a chinese prophecy that you can not have pleasure without pain and sorrow without happiness. It shows how the lives of different people intertwine and affect each other. Some for the better, some for the worse. (This is one of my favorite movies and NO, it’s not JUST because Buffy is in it!)

3. The Giant Mechanical Man. This movie was recommended to me by a friend and it did not disappoint. It’s about trying to figure out who you are and what you want to do with your life and coming to the realization that you don’t have to know. Not everything is meant to be figured out and sometimes, people never figure it out no matter how old they are.

4. Blue Valentine. I really liked this indie drama about a broken relationship that despite their best efforts, can not be saved. Realistic, honest and poignant – Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams give an outstanding performance. No surprise there, though.

5. Into The Wild. This movie (and book) is for those of us who have that reckless soul, the desire to travel, discover and conquer. The ones who are in constant search of something better, something more. For anyone who loves Henry David Theroux and Walden, this movie is for you. By the end, you will learn what the meaning of true happiness is and how it isn’t always found in the place you most expect.

6. Lars And Real Girl. This is a beautiful movie also starring Ryan Gosling. It’s a story of healing and how people deal with issues of the past in different ways. A truly moving story about overcoming the past and learning to be happy with the present.

7. Celeste And Jesse Forever. This is another movie about a relationship that ends, but this story is told through the lens of an honest storyteller. With honest dialogue, honest feelings and emotions, and a realistic ending. Everything about it, is so real. Everybody who watches will be truly touched.

8. Adventureland. This is tailored to all adolescents and those of us who have yet to figure out what we want to do with our lives. It’s comical, and yet somehow it really resonates with you. I recommend this to all young people still trying to figure out their lives, but Kristen Stewart haters may want to stay away from this one. (Although, I think she is great in it).

9. Before Midnight. This movie is simply beautifully told. Starring Ethan Hawke and July Delpy it tells the story of a twenty year long romance and what it feels like after twenty years and two kids. All adults who have been married and or have children will love this movie because it will leave you with the feeling that although marriage is the hardest job you will ever have, it’s worth it in the end because of what you have created with that person.

10. The Art of Getting By. This is a movie about a young boy who lives an apathetic and passionless existence until he meets someone who makes him realize what is worth living for. This movie is beautiful and profound and every young person should watch it, although older people (like my dad) will love it too.

These movies are all independent films with real characters. If you don’t like indie films then stay away, but know that you are missing out. Even if these movies don’t change your life, they will alter your perspective and inspire you to live differently.

Other films I recommend.

Candy

Take This Waltz

Like Crazy

Winters Bone

Drive
