Monsters And Memories

22 Aug

I asked her why she always changed the song

when I played it in my car.

She said, “because,

it was my song with him.”

I asked her why she always avoided that street

when she drove me around.

She said, “because,

we had our first kiss there.”

I asked her why she never invited me

to her lake house anymore.

She said, “because,

sitting on the dock by the water,  I learned

that he both loved and didn’t, anymore.”

I looked into her yellow- green eyes, full

of pain and longing and love, and said:

“They are memories you can not

escape. Don’t turn them into monsters.”
