The book you didn’t finish writing would have changed the lives of many people.
The band you gave up on would have radically changed the world of music even more so than The Beatles.
The family vacation you didn’t take would have been the last time your whole family would be together and happy. Your dad would die two weeks later.
The dog you didn’t save from being euthanized at the local shelter would have saved your son from drowning that cold day in November.
The orphan who sits on her bed praying for a family to come take her home and love her will never get adopted. She will become homeless and die of a drug overdose. If she had been adopted, she would have become the next Mother Theresa.
The man who never proposed to his girlfriend out of fear of ending up like his parents died, sad and alone.
The vacation to Hawaii you wanted to take twenty years ago, but never did, would have changed your whole life. You would have met your soul mate and eloped on the beach. You would still be happily married today.
The girl you see on your bus every day that sits in the same seat with the same black fingernail polish and the loneliest look in her eyes wants to kill herself. If you had sat next to her that last day, you would have made a new friend. She would have been a bridesmaid at your wedding. Her parents were the only ones that went to her funeral.
If you had quit the corporate job that makes you miserable, you would still have a good relationship with your children.
The homeless man on the street corner that you drive by without a second glance would have used that dollar you gave him to buy a lottery ticket. He would have won millions and used the money to help find a cure for aids.
The old lady sitting in her rocking chair talking to her grandchildren about life has terminal cancer. She tells her grandchildren stories of love and adventure from her younger days. Her grandson will ask, “So did you do everything in life you always wanted to, Grandma?”
“Almost,” she says.
`If wishes were horses, beggars would ride` – lovely post though, very poignant.
Very nice writing
Very creative post, with a powerful message. Thank you for sharing! Love the title.
This was a really amazing post. It made me think of the opportunities I could face in the future.
If she had been adopted, she would have become the next Mother Theresa? What does the author thinking of?
And whose Theresa?’I WANNA KNOW!’
Hauntingly beautiful.
It’s stories like the one above that make me want to live my life to the fullest. Hopefully someday, I can look back and have almost no regrets.
Great post to encourage others to live life to the fullest. Though I don’t believe in dwelling on the “what ifs..”
it’s more about doing the things we have always wanted to do, but somehow life got in the way of doing them. for instance, going on vacation – perhaps work got in the way. adopting a dog- you just never got around to it. etc.
Inspiring and thought provoking. Thank-you.
This is beautiful.
Wow. This gives me encouragement and hope. I just quit my corporate job that was making me miserable. And I feel like everyone secretly thinks I’m crazy, but I have to believe it’s for the best.
If you spend your life thinking of what could have been, you can get so lost in thought that you miss what yet could be. Ask me how I know sometime. Nice post nevertheless, if a bit wishful.
Oh, I think the idea is not about dwellng on what might have been but more about recognising that everything we do can have unintended consequences. The wishful part is that all those unintended consequences could be beautiful. The message I’ve taken from Taylie Jay is that we should recognise when fear is preventing us from engaging with those around us and ask ourselves each time if that fear is warranted. That way we are open so that we don’t miss what is yet to come. I don’t know if that was the intended message but that’s where I ended up.
You got the exact message I was trying to send, Cherrie! Thank you so much for listening… It means more than any of you will ever know!
*sigh*
Makes me wanna go out there and shake off that eerie feeling
It’s is the very thing that I came to realize after I tried to commit suicide and changed my life and started living.
Wow. I am so happy that you found the strength to stay here with us and find a life you love. I’d love to hear more about your story if you are willing to share. xo
**Wow , that was heavy! And is why we should all work daily to live the life we love; and love the life we’re living. We’ve got the power to do that every, single day…
Great title.
SO TRUE. And yet so often we just don’t.
I want to be someone who goes for it.
I love it when I find something written in 500 words that I could not do in ten thousand. Truly beautiful.
Wow, thank you!!

Thankfully I’ve learned enough English to read this text. The meaning behind these words is wonderful. And you’re a wonderful writer. Sitting in my chair, enjoyed every word. I will follow your blog from now on. And I must say: thank you!
It’s beautiful!
Such a fascinating piece of writing! Thank you and great job!
Awesome post! I will keep an on eye on your blog.
Nice pic
Poignant and lovely write…
But: in the time in which you didn’t write the book or start the band, you did something else. You can only spend every hour once, so we will never get around doing everything we want to do: http://andreasmoser.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/wasting-time-chess/
Agreed
It’s poignant posts like this one which makes me want to live life to the fullest and live with no regrets, take every opportunity I can grasp.

I have to say that this is beautiful…the words are inspiring.
Your blog made me really think. I am going through some serious times as my mom is in a coma and I wonder what if myself. Thanks for blogging about this.
Thank you for reading and so sorry to hear about your mother. Stay strong and I hope you take the message in “The Ghost of Almost” with you wherever you go. “The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live…. For me.”
Thanks for replying to me. I hope you have a nice day. http://www.segmation.com

Your words were well chosen and truly thoughtful. I’ve also seen the ‘almost ghost’ described as a type of ‘loss’ related to the angst of what will never be.
Congrats on being FP! Cheers!!
Lovely words and haunting too. Thank you.
Nice writing!:-))

very thought provoking!
We’re given so many opportunities, yet we look right past them. We dwell on outcomes and pre-judge the situation before participation. We rely solely on our judgements of the future.
I think as the human experience continues to unfold we should embrace each moment and live vicariously, be curious of the world around us, and take chances.
This was a beautiful post.

Very powerful… to often we do shy away from taking that next step… Hopefully this will inspire others to take that chance.

Amazing. Brings out thoughts on life.
Brilliantly written. If there is one thing you want to earn before you die it would be the right to say ‘No Regrets, bless my sould , out I go’ 🙂
I enjoyed your insight on reality. We are all guilty of similar things at some point in our life, many times with out realizing it, actually most of the time. Has society dulled our senses?
Made me think of this
Could’ve been so beautiful
Could’ve been so right
Could’ve been my lover
Every day of my life
Could’ve been so beautiful
Could’ve been so right
I’ll never hold what could’ve been
On a cold and lonely night
A significant word to so many aspects of life. Beautifully written too.
This is beautiful and extremely thought-provoking. Thank you.
Incredibly thought provoking. Makes me want to go do something, anything. I just don’t want to miss out!
~FringeGirl
This definitely makes me think and reflect on not only my past but my everyday actions. How many “ghosts of almost” were created out of fear? pride? misunderstandings? Thanks you for this post!!
Yes. those are exactly the things that so often hold us back from doing the things in life we desire deep down. Thank you for reading! xo
really makes you think…

loved the post…its so amazing as we do it almost every day — ‘almost’
Wow amazing

WHAT I WANT?
That, is why you should CEASE every single moment in your life, because you don’t know when’s your last, that’s very insightful
Good post. Your style of writing is really amazing.
Beautiful and Poetical version of a Bucket List 😉
Really great thoughts and a really great article, that make someone thinking about the life.
Who doesn’t think “But what if…?” Maybe we should stop questioning and start living our lifes…’Cause “almost” doesn’t help us in any way, but it’s with us every second. But why do we have all this doubts? It’s like “the unbearable lightness of being”
This is such a lovely post and really hit home! Keep writing. 🙂

Thank you!
I liked your post. Never regret, love your life anyway, we only have one so no use wasting it on regrets
This is really sad. It makes me think of my best friend Katie who died last year from a drug overdose. She had the most potential of any one I ever met. GORGEOUS. TALENTED. FUNNY beyond measure. She couldn’t figure out what path to take and thus, was never really rooted here. Lots of “Almosts”…

That is really inspiring to get me to do everything I want to do. This is good inspiration for me at the beginning of my blog which is a challenge to complete something for myself.
I have a bucket list which I work on each year, which will cut down on many regrets that I will have when I am retired. This was wonderfully written. Thanks for sharing it!
I’m so lucky to have met such a smart and talented friend!! LOVE this piece.
Awww. I love you! And ditto girl. You are too!
I did everything that came my way and I almost forgot my way! Joke apart, very nice article.
So much more powerful than “YOLO”. Wasted chances, wasted opportunities- how many times have I not done what I dreamed of because of doubt… Sigh. Thank you~ Rae
Simply put, amazing.
Oh god. I better get on that novel…
This is such a powerful piece – Its inspirational, beauitful and I Love It! Im a new blogger and I was hoping you could help me get public. You’re REALLY good!

Stunning. “What could have been” is definitely one of the saddest things one can contemplate, and this really captures that in every way.
Thought provoking. Let’s go out and live.

May I simply just say what a relief to discover a person that actually knows what they are discussing on the web. You actually understand how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More and more people should read this and understand this side of the story. I was surprised that you aren’t more popular since you certainly possess the gift.|
Can’t live your life thinking about the “what ifs”, good writing though.

nice post and I agree with many of the previous comments – definitely makes you think – great message for being proactive – it could all be over tomorrow! However I mean that in an uplifting rather than morbid way 🙂
This is amazing. It’s so inspirational, and bittersweet, and poetic. I guess these days, we’ve become scared of going for what we really want, that in the end, we miss so many opportunities and memories.
This also reminds me, I should keep writing that half finished novel I started writing 2 years ago…
As we stand on the cusp of “tomorrow,” there is an infinity of possibility laid out before us. But once we take that first step into “today,” or are pushed into it by the unforgiving march of time, all are struck down except that one that is. What you call “almost” is the shell of infinity moulted away at each step on the journey of life.
Great post!
Sincerely,
Julien Haller
Wow, what a great post. I am sure I will think about it the whole weekend. 😉
UGH… I “almost” made it through this post without feeling guilty… almost. I liked it thought.
Thank you for the auspicious writeup. It in fact was a amusement account it. Look advanced to more added agreeable from you! By the way, how can we communicate?|

Well done on a elegantly and thoughtfully written piece. I do often think of ‘what if’ but I also marvel at ‘thank goodness’. I’ve been through a lot in my life but I have two beautiful little girls so am happy for what I have. Your post reminded me of the movie ‘Sliding Doors’ – have you seen it? Anyway, well done 🙂
I have seen it actually. It was a beautifully written movie with a thought provoking sentiment. One action or inaction, one chance encounter, one random occurrence can be the difference between life and death. It’s crazy, but absolute truth. EVERYTHING we do or do not do in this life matters. Thanks for reading!! xo
Very inspiring and wonderfully composed.
I’m on a mission to life with purpose and to finish what I start 🙂
